Influence of social networks on the body self-perception of nursing academics

We sought to identify the students’ profile and relate social media consumption to body self-perception. This is a descriptive, explanatory, field, quantitative research carried out with 219 nursing students at a private university, using a questionnaire. The chi-square test was applied for association between variables (p-value < 0.05). 83.1% of students had image distortion, of which 58.5% overestimate their body; 74% believe that social networks influence body perception, with Instagram being the most used social network (89.5%). An association was observed between younger people (p 0.004) and single people (0.003) with body dissatisfaction. Also, being a woman (p 0.003) and following influencers (p 0.003; p 0.001) interferes with the desire to change one’s body and habits. Singles (p 0.004) demonstrated insecurity in emotional relationships related to self-image. The importance of demystifying the beauty standards imposed by society and strengthening young people’s self-esteem is highlighted.
