This study presents a historical overview of mortality statistics and their different uses. Current perceptions on mortality statistics were initially formed through a publication by John Graunt in 1662. Herein, the relevance of William Farr’s role in the development of mortality statistics (approximately 1838) is discussed. In addition, we compare the uses for morbidity and mortality data; the different uses are discussed, qualified and recommended. The Ministry of Health’s Mortality Information System (Sistema de Informações sobre Mortalidade - SIM) was established over 30 years ago and has improved quantitatively and qualitatively. Such improvements facilitate different uses for statistics by the Brazilian Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde – SUS) management and other users.
