This article approaches the importance of religion in the life and works of the Brazilian singer Clara Nunes (1943-1982), presenting the meaning she attributed to her duty, by seeing herself as a missionary: her songs were intended to minorate the suffering of the people she identified herself with. Her work is analyzed through some selected recordings, and gains meaning when articulated with the interpreter’s religious experiences, marked by her religious transits, mainly the ones between Catholicism, Umbanda, Kardecism and Candomble rites.Downloads
