This article is based on a study to delineate the characterization of scientific production which includes the issue on the Zika virus, indexed in international databases, published since the 1940s, thus contributing to build an overview of advances in scientific production about that theme. We used bibliometrics as an analytical tool to measure the scientific activity in this thematic field. For identification of the studies we carried out a search in five databases: Lilacs, PubMed/Medline, Scielo, Scopus and Web of Science (WOS). From 711 publications, only 242 publications were analyzed after exclusion of given productions by criteria previously established. We note the lack of national studies on the subject and the evident need for further research in these terms, since the results are essential for the development of interventions.
